About Us.We are a multi-ethnic parish that has been part of the Bronx for generations. Founded in 1852, Fordham United Methodist Church is called to be a church where people grow spiritually, develop an essential Christian character, experience the transforming grace of God, deepen the relationship with God and become faithful disciples of Jesus Christ and the world. LeadershipThe Reverend Leo W. Curry, Pastor of Fordham United Methodist Church, entered the ordained ministry after a successful career teaching French, Spanish, and English as a Second Language. He received his undergraduate and graduate education in Romance Languages and Literature at Howard University. His seminary education was completed at New York Theological Seminary where he distinguished himself as a student of Dr. George W. Webber, Dr. Gayraud Wilmore, Dr. Richard T. Snyder, Dr. Keith Russell, Dr. Minka Sprague and Dr. Norman K. Gottwald. Reverend Curry's philosophy is that the church is first and foremost a teaching institution which teaches the content of the Christian faith aimed at transformation of human character and the world. He firmly believes in an inclusive church where all of God's children are welcome. Dr. John Carlton Banks, Music Director, has been affiliated with the FUMC Choir for over a decade. He began as a Bass section leader and for the past seven years he has served as Music Director. A native of Washington, D.C., Dr. Banks holds music degrees from Howard University, Florida State University and Columbia University. Working in close collaboration with Rev. Leo W. Curry, Dr. Banks believes Fordham's music ministry should include a diverse musical experience as this diversity enhances the worship experience. To that end, Fordham's musical offerings encompass a wide range for genres from arranged anthems, traditional and sacred music, Negro spirituals and classical pieces. Under Dr. Bank's leadership, Fordham has performed Handel's Messiah, Part I, for nine consecutive years. These performances include full orchestra with Harpsichord. Dr. Banks continues to perform as a concert artist, professional chorister, choral director, and free lance operatic baritone. He is the High School Choral Director at Briarcliff High School in Briarcliff Manor, NY. Under his leadership, his choral students have won superior ratings at adjudications and music festivals. Dr. Banks is certified by the College Board as a teacher of Advanced Placement Music Theory. Laity
